If anyone is contemplating at trip to Oaxaca, especially for the Day of The Dead in late October/early November, I will be happy to share any knowledge of the area that I learned while there in 2005. Just reply to this posting.

Has Oaxaca settled down from the very serious disturbances of 2005-2006? A friend of mine got caught up in that mess and his experience was pretty awful.

I was there for Dia de la Muerte in 2005, and it was great. As you said, there was civil unrest during the 2006 celebration time. I also had a friend there and though he didn't see any violence, he said that the hotel we had stayed in, the Marquis del Valle, had been closed since June of 2006. I just hated to think of all those nice hotel employees out of work.
However, he went back this past Oct/Nov and he said it was 95% back like it had been in '05. The only disappointing thing was that the City government had banned the street vendors from the area around the Zocalo and the cathedral. Unfortunately, they were a great part of the interesting cultural differences between that part of Mexico and here in the U.S.
