Arches NP In Its Winter Glory
I just returned from a trip to the Moab area for the better part of the last five days. One of my goals this winter was to get shots of this area after a storm and I think I succeeded pretty well. It was definitely worth the harrowing drive out there (near whiteout conditions between Durango and Cortez and generally icy, snowpacked roads until I hit Utah).

The shot above was taken after a disappointing late day session at Arches where cloudy skies and flat light ruled the landscape. I spent most of my time that afternoon location scouting when things unexpectedly got interesting just a few minutes before sunset. I rushed back to this location (thank god there was almost nobody in the park) to get the last light on the La Sals which I shot at 400mm to get full frame. This was the beginning of what turned into quite the fantastic sunset.

Very nice Guy. It might be nice if you could mask around the rocks to brighten them a bit, but there really isn't anything bad in this shot. I really like the telephoto compression here.

I've had more than one harrowing drive to Moab from Denver myself.

I remember this sunset, Guy. Unfortunately I was working that night and could only appreciate it through the windshield of my patrol vehicle. I'm glad you took advantage of it!

Nice job taking advantage of the purply light.

Wow, that's a lot of zoom compression going on! I like it.
Do you have any where the rocks are getting more light? That would be nice too.

Good job!

Kalin, the sun never lit up the rocks that night. By the time it made its appearance they were already in shadow. I did take a three shot panoramic of this area (again with the 400mm lens) in the late afternoon a couple of days later. Here's a link to it as its pretty big and I'm too lazy to size it down for the guidelines here.

Nice Pano too!

That panorama is absolutely stunning!
The lit rocks in that one trump the sunset glow in the sky of this one easily.

The top shot is a bit contrasty but it's still quite pretty. On the other hand, the pano is totally killer!

SWEET! This is a spectacular shot!!!! :toast:

the pano is great!

Your collection of red rock photos are terriffic. I would suggest you try another color for the
pbase site. It is almost impossible to read the comments that visitors leave.

Thanks again for the comments guys!

Stan - I agree the above image is a little on the contrasty side. The jpg compression ain't helping it either.

Ken - Yep, the pano is listed for sale on my website although its a special purchase print that I'll have to print at home (as Smugmug's options for pano printing are way too limited).

Arthur - I agree with your comments on the color scheme. I think I'll have to do something about that.
