Gigrin last Saturday to try out the fixed 1D3. Where else can you be sure of seeing plenty of wild birds well within range. The sun was out until ten to two. Feeding starts at two.
ISO 1250 1/1000 f8 500mm
This sequence of seven images was simultaneously processed in RAW. I have used cut and paste to arrange the bird in some sort of order. No re-sizing, sharpening, saturation or levels adjustment. A little colour replacement to get the background more or less even.
I'll follow this image with a single cropped specimen.
After taking several hundred shots 15% were for the bin. Perhaps all of these were my fault. Several with no sign of a bird.
Well folks after all the various comments I for one am well satisfied.

The first image looks like Gigrin on a normal day-seriously did you take any shots with a fussy background as thats where i had the problem there, The second image shows how acrobatic these lovely birds really are-Nice one

The only images that are consistently for the bin are those where the birds a skimming along the ground. This maybe due to the fact that they are closer to the background or more likely they are travelling to fast for me to keep them anywhere near the focus point. Additionally I think the shutter speed was perhaps a bit to slow.
Here's a shot with an unclear background, cropped but not sharpened.

I'd go better than that Jack, I'd say that it is the most outsatanding image of a red kite that I have ever seen. Pure art. Eric

Thanks to all for the comments. I'm really pleased with the second image here and the way the camera tracked the sequence in the first image. On further examination I have found that I have a sequence of tweleve shots on one burst all nicely in focus.
Sio I'm quite happy so far but I recognise that I have much work to do to perfect the techneque.
Mark. Yes I took some landscape on a 5D but have not yet downloaded the files.
