How is access to the Carver's gap parking area in winter after snows? I have 4wd.
I'm planning to travel up to the mountains some time this winter after a snow event. Right now, the only Appalachian bald area that I know has pretty good access is Max Patch via I-40 and the Harmon's Den exit. All of the parkway areas are pretty much out of bounds AFAIK unless you hike in from side roads. But I am thinking that perhaps Roan offers some good opportunities along the AT.

Carvers Gap is always open. It is a major paved road. Much easier access than Max Patch.
Good to hear that Jerry. 441 is a major road in the Smokies but they close it whenever it snows, so often that you can pretty much count on not having access when the conditions are nice for winter photography. The max patch roads are treacherous in winter, but they do not close them because of snow, at least in my experience. I'm glad to hear that the road to Carvers Gap stays open in the winter.
Thanks!

441 is a major road but it's controled by the Park Service and that's the difference. It's access for the Park as well insted of a state highway and people live along the route. That's the reason for this section to be maintained.
