Northwest Arkansas was covered in rain clouds all Saturday afternoon. For some reason I checked the weather satellite image online before leaving work, and noticed the edge of the cloud cover was coming our way. Hoping the setting sun might shine through an opening and light up the undersides of the clouds, I rushed home to grab my camera then headed to the Arkansas River at Van Buren...something I do several times a month.
I cropped the bottom fourth, and sharpened after reducing for web output. No other enhancements were made.

John, great shot and I echo Tim's comments about the detail in the clouds. I saw this event unfoldiing Saturday but I did not have my camera with me. Glad you made it down to the river.

Great shot, John! I remember how orange the sky was just above the horizon Saturday - just incredible. It was as orange as I've ever seen it. I thought about taking a few photos, but didn't think anybody would believe the intense color. Also, I wasn't at a location that would compliment such a beautiful sky, so I just enjoyed watching it unfold.
John a great sunset shot. You caught some good light and cloud detail. I like the reflection color also. Where do you go to shoot on the river?

Gale, I go to the old Lee Creek Park. It's an abandoned Corps of Engineers camping and picnic area. You go to the end of Main Street and turn right past the chicken plant, which smells just awful when it's warm outside. It's around 2 miles to the boat ramp at the end of the park at the mouth of Lee Creek, and there are several spots along the last three-fourths of a mile. There's not much in the way of foreground elements at these locations, but you can get right to the water's edge. I've seen ducks, geese, and even pelicans along the way. This time last year a bald eagle flew right overhead as I was shooting a sunset.
John, thanks I figured that was where this shot was from. I haven't been down there in years. Looks like it faces the right direction and is a good spot for sunsets. I'm always looking for places close to home without buildings etc. in them. Sometimes the clouds just put on a show and you need to get somewhere to capture it. Great job on the sunset and thanks for the information.

Nice capture John. My sunrise & sunset shots tend to be on the dark side so I like this alot. Nice detail on the clouds and some very pretty color. Thanks for sharing.
