In other words small in the frame as it didn't come any closer been trying these for while now and no joy but I like this one as it shows the Bird in its habitat but I do like these shots. I just need some close ups now

Fantastic Danny. I love this shot too

It's a brilliant shot Danny - I almost prefer this sort of shot to the normal portrait shot of the bittern in the reeds. I live right next to the Lee Valley Regional Park and know just how elusive this bird really is.
Very, very nice indeed. Love these bird in habitat shots.
PS. There is one thing, that IMHO would make this image even better..............................................................................................................................
...............a sheep peering out of the distant reedbed

Hi Danny
For me this is so much better than a close up - I love everything about it especially to have caught it in flight with the wing position just perfect!

This is the first time I've seen a photo of the complete bird - excellent shot!

As a bittern enviro Danny I think you do your image a bit of an injustice - it's a great shot with action to boot
Gets a BIG thumbs up from here

Top Drawer, great position, comp and especially like the fact that it isn't lost in the background. Well done ewe. Eric

I think this shows more about a bittern than a static portrait ever could. Why bother following shooting the same as everyone else when you can capture a superb habitat shot like this

Hi Danny,
What a cracking shot of a bittern and in-flight too. I do prefer these types of shots to the real close-up portraits that are more frequently seen. Well done!
Fantastic shot! Close ups/portraits are overrated - an environmental shot such as this tells us far more about the bird, its habitat and behaviour, and are more of a challenge for the photographer in terms of composition. Top notch, one of the best bittern shots I've seen.

Cheers Guys for your nice comments hope to get some more soon.
Justin don;t mention sheep, been sleeping badly lately and someone mentioned counting the bloody things no offence to all you sheep lovers out there.

Danny - you want to read Hicks and Shultz book on 'perfect exposure'. I never did get beyond Ch1, fell asleep every time. It is very tedious reading by two very tedious people! Much simpler to just go back to first principles.

Like the layers of reeds and to get the bitterns in flight pose is great.
