I went to have a peek at the Arctic Loon that's being seen near Brownsmead, and swung by Ecola State Park afterward. It was surprisingly pleasant, relatively warm and calm. This was Indian Beach after sunset.
I've been playing around with monitor calibration targets, which can give you a real sense of vertigo on what's "right" and "wrong." The Eye-One Match software recommends a luminosity setting of 100 for a CRT monitor, and 150 for an LCD. I find the 150 unpleasantly bright, so I used 120 for this photo. Let me know if you think this one is too light or dark overall.

You nailed an incredible exposure there at the beach - very pleasing... I like your care in lining up the arch tunnel there.....

John: My monitor is not calibrated, so I'm sorry I can't help you out there.
However, the sand exposure looks perfect for me; its brilliant! Love the radiating ripple effect around the big boulder in the foreground. The little arch tunnel is a nice touch.

I am on a calibrated LCD and must say that the exposure looks very well done to me. This has some beautiful color and smoothness that really attracts the eye.

On my 'uncalibrated' Dell work LCD monitor it looks awesome!!! What an image! Hey, wait a minute I thought it is supposed to be raining and cloudy all the time over there right now. That can't be Oregon in the Winter!
We are actually planning our family vacation out there this summer. I can't wait to see the coast again! This image encompasses all the elements which I love so much about shooting seascapes and just being near the sea. Thank you for sharing this beautiful shot. I can almost smell the salt air now.
This looks perfect John. Beautiful range of light captured here!

Couldn't have said it any better than the previous posters. Just beautiful. My only nit is that on my monitor at work I can see a small halo around the large rock in the background.

Beautifully composed. Great range of colors and excellent attention to detail. Great light on the wet sand.

Yeah, you nailed this one. Great job. I love the colors. A tad too sharp though...

Excellent detail I can see now at home on my fancy new LCD

John, I really like the vertical comp here and the subtle hues of purple are just perfect....
also this has great shadow detail through out the image....well done!

Thanks very much for the comments all. I have little experience with low light photography, so this shot was a real learner. The halo and the sharpening may be connected; I hope to post this in ESS in the future, and I'll play with these before posting there.
