Gull ID please
Hi to all,

Gull , photographed at Bempton this morning , I think it's a first winter Herring Gull but I'm not sure , if anyone can give me a positive ID it would be most appreciated.

Levels , Usm(100,0.5,0 x1) , S/h , Contrast , Cropped.

Canon 40D , 500F4IS , Gitzo1325 , Wimberley v2
1/1250th @ F4 iso100 RAW

Also can anyone answer me this question please.

Today was the first time I'd tried to capture some serious flight shots with my 40D and I have to say I was very disapointed with it's performance , the auto focus struggled to lock on in any and all combinations of set-up , whether that be Servo or One-shot , centre or all focus points  ,wish I'd have taken my old 20D because that would have nailed the focus no problem , so to the question , does the 40D use the same cross type sensors as the MK111 ???.

All comments welcome

Regards

Andy...

Might be a first winter Lesser Black-back, or you could well be right at a Herring of the same age - I really find it impossible to tell to be honest Andy.

Nice capture :toast:

Hi Andy,

Cheers for comments and a quick question if I may , I think in Paul Inglis's thread about gimbal heads you suggested using a leveling base , firstly do you use one and secondly are they any good.

Cheers

Hi Andy,

1st winter Herring Gull for me too. A very nice shot of one it is!. Regarding levelling bases, I have a G1321 for my G1548, it's an invaluable bit of kit, that really does save a lot of mucking about, I just simply loosen of the handle and move/tilt until spirit level is level.

Thanks for the comments guys :toast:

Rob is your levelling base made by Gitzo and if so will it fit my 1325 ???

Cheers

Andy - I certainly do use one as a permanent fixture on my 1548 and I wouldn't be without it - I presume it'll fit your t/pod.

Hi Andrew,

Yes it is Gitzo. Not 100% sure it will fit yours, but a quick google search would suggest it does.

Hi Andrew,

A very nice in-flight shot of what I do think is a ‘First Winter Herring Gull’ apposed to a ‘Lesser Black-Backed Gull’.

With reference to the levelling base – a big yes – as Andy stated it saves messing with the legs. As Rob said, I too used a G1321 on a G1548 tripod but unfortunately the levelling base got damaged as it took a dived of a cliff. I tried to get a replacement but discovered it was discontinued. After emailing Gitzo (or rather Kata direct) I was informed that the new Gitzo GS5120LVL Levelling Base was a direct replacement and does indeed fit the older G1548 as well as the new models. I actually have one on order but stocks are scarce at the moment since it is so new.

The base fits series 3/4/5. Hope this helps.
