Male fledgling Pileated Woodpecker
I'm really struggling with PS3 and the workflow which was kindly suggested previously. I just have a Dell inspiron 9200 laptop and I'm rapidly coming to the conclusion that I'm fighting a losing battle. The RAW download always looks far better in lightroom than the adjusted finish in PS3. The laptop screen lacks quality in my opinion but I don't want to blame the tools when it could well be my handling.

Any comments and critique most welcome.

Hi Barry,

Hope you don't mind but I downloaded your image and a quick tinker, I did:

Noise reduction:
strength 10
preserve details 60%
reduce colour noise 28%
sharpen details 25%

check remove jpeg artefact box

then:

smart sharpen on eye/head

once at:

amount 66%
radius 2.1 pixels
remove: gaussian blur

then USM (unsharp mask)

six rounds at:

Amount 100%
radius 0.2%
threshold 0

It's not brilliant but has reduced the noise and sharpened it up a bit.

HTH

Regards

Rob

Hi Barry,

It looks like quite a big crop? The original post doesn't look sharp, but that could well be down to handholding a 500mm, or a large crop, rather than your processing.

To improve your processing, I'd either get a friend to go through it with you, or maybe try a book on RAW processing? I can't explain the difference between Lightroom and CS3, not being familiar with either programme.

Must have been a great sight to see though!

I love to see the really high quality photos on this forum, but sometimes, there is as much to be learnt from one that the photographer is having problems with. There was a recent thread asking for ideas to improve the forum and I wonder if a problems forum would be a good idea. Somewhere that the less experienced or people who are having problems with new kit could post asking for advice. I alkways find the solutions to other peoples problems are a help to me as well.
Nice picture in there after all wasn't there Barry, doesn't he look like road-runner?

Hi Barry,

I use a Dell M90 with no ill effects when processing. If its wrong its usually me. I struggle from time to time with editing certain images (especially those where I've got blown the highlights).
