Kiwanda sunset rough seas
Sunset at Cape Kiwanda with some good waves. Is the sun too bright?
Any other critique is appreciated.

Canon 350D, 2 stop ND grad, blend of two exposures.
F22, .40 sec and 1/4 sec at 21mm.

Very nice shot!

Cape K. is one of my favorite places on the coast. We usually travel there once a month in the summer, and it seems as if a person can spend days out on the cape and not run out of subjects to shoot.

When was this photo taken?

IMHO, the sun is not too bright, but possibly just on the borderline. Any brighter and it would be too much. Sunsets like this are hard and I think you've done a fine job with your processing.

Also, I think the color of the water and the colors of the sandstone rock looks great.

Larry, this is pretty darn nice overall. Two minor issues of critque, if you don't mind: The water seems a bit too blue for my taste and my attention is split a bit too much by the extreme lower highlights...maybe you could bring out those shadows above it a little more.

The last time I was out there, I received enough shock through 30 feet of sandstone and several feet of sand on top of that from a wave impact to knock me into the air a few inches. This area is pretty unstable. You can feel it moving around under your feet when the waves are really hopping. It won't be long until another big piece breaks off. Be careful.

about the picture, grad filters always make things look unbalanced to me. Best to not start a feud on that subject. Anyway, I always enjoy any new angle on coastal views. Thanks for putting this up.

Larry, this looks good to me. I agree with Marc on the too blue water. Can't find anything else about the image I don't like. Nice all around.

I really do like the wave action hitting the rock.....the bright sun does distract a bit from the overall image!

Thanks all- I agree with you about the water being too blue. Here is an attempt to desturate the blues a little and open up some of the shadows. Though the water is still probably too blue, attempts to further reduce it detracted from the contrast with the rocks and sky.

Outstanding composition Larry. I prefer the color in the second shot, and the luminosity in the first.

THe water is still too blue. Other than that, the comp is great and the sun is positioned perfectly.

Deliciously beautiful! What planet did you say this is? No, really, your comp is very nice but like Ric and the others said the color and shadows are a tad over the top.

I actually could live with the color and shadows if need be, but I find the detail to be a little too soft to draw me in much. It definitely is a composition worth experimenting for.

Beautiful scene, Larry. I agree that backing off on the saturation even further - especially the blues - and working to enhance/sharpen the details would be of benefit.

On the blending side of things, something seems a bit odd. The left side seems okay. But on the right, the foreground formation feels likes it's been dropped onto the water; something about the focus or sharpness makes it appear less like a blend and more like a cut and paste. Not sure I'm explaining it well, but it feels a little disjointed on that right side.
