Winter's Icy River
Taken along the beautiful Clackamas River early this morning as the ice made footing a real B*tch.......I only fell a few times on crystal clear ice but hey....I did get a couple shots off.....

Cheers

It's a pretty shot, Darren - I've been wanting to get up on the Clackamas...

I know it is probably just the way the 10mm distorts the top some, but I might change the tilt a little to the right just very slightly to perhaps make it look a little straighter...

Your exposure sure looks right on!

I have to mostly agree with Ned. Hard to make just a river a good subject but you succeeded. I'm diggin this one. Be careful with that new toy of yours walking around on that ice.

What Eric said, D300's make for expensive elbow pads! I'm usually not a big fan of most sweeping river scenes without a strong anchor, but the mix of foreground and background is working well for this one.

Side of river comps are boring to me for the most part. I think you made the best comp here though. I'd try it again in the fall when those trees are turning. I like your processingon this one.

And be careful out there...

Hey Darren,

Agree with above - your work is always interesting for the viewer. And ditto on being careful (no Columbia boots, eh?).

Darren: I think it's a beauty but the tilting trees are a bit disturbing. I hear ya regarding the slippage thing. I nearly went swimming with my camera and tripod last week, slipping around on the shore of the Wenatchee River.

Darren, this is pretty solid technically, which you have proven you can pull off with consistency. I am having difficulty finding a strong enough focal point in this one, however. I think getting an upstream-viewing perspective would have latched the eye to the primary subjects.

I like it. Lots of interest and detail throughout; great perspective. The contrast seems relatively high, but it's working for me. I wouldn't mind seeing a little higher above those trees, but not knowing what's up there, I'm assuming/hoping it was more trees.

The top of the photo really bothers me because of the distortion, but the rest is nice. Great color in the water.
