I want to make and print a multistep grayscale strip. I made a black-to-white gradient, then posterized it. I got more or less what I wanted, but the width of the stripes varies. I could fix it with brute force, but that is an unpleasant idea, especially because I may want to make some similar strips in colors....
Does anyone know how to make a grayscale strip with equal sized blocks?

I would create a new background and then start making the strips as 'new' in the size I want and filling with the different grays and then adding it to the first new background. When completed, select all, flatten and print.. There's one way.. Bet there will be more.. Guess that is the brute force you were talking about..

Pete,
These guys have a downloadable step wedge (not exactly what you asked about, but it might help)

I clearly remember a few years back when directions for doing this were floating around the web. My memory isn't good enough to recall if it was on NPN, however. Have you tried a search? Luminous Landscape is another likely place to find it. I haven't done it myself, so that's about all the "help" I can offer.

Create a new file with a white background. Then create a new 100% black 'square' shape (rectangle tool) this creates a new layer 'shape 1'. Duplicate the layer and move 'Shape 1 copy' as the new layer is called to the right of the old layer. Set layer opacity to 80%. Repeat process to get a series os squares that line up to produce a strip of ever lightening grey squares. For smoother gradient use less difference in each opacity step.
