Alien landscape in IR (from Arches)
This is from Arches, just after sunrise, last spring. I'd like to know how to make it better. It's a 10 second exposure from a Canon A620 with Hoya R72 filter. I haven't spent a lot of time on this, just a quick raw conversion, some noise removal, and some slight vignetting. I'm not sure if I like the toning. If making it better entails another trip to Arches, I'm all for that too!

Thanks for any thoughts,
Paul

Is that a picture in your pocket, or are you just excited to see me?

The large blown out area in the clouds is a little troubling, but I think it might be far less noticeable if you were to scrap the brown toning for neutral or slightly blue. Maybe bump contrast a bit, too. Either way, the toning as is doesn't float my boat, but a different color, or none at all, would.

The lack of detail in the cloud bothers me a bit too, especially since there is LOTS of GREAT detail in the foreground and rocks. Most likely those clouds were moving and they just smeared over your 10 sec. exposure.

But I really like the toning and the gradation in the sky - gives me that "old west" feeling.

Alternate comp? Horizontal pano with clouds and foreground cropped out?? Maybe? See what you think.

Todd, I thought it looked like a rocket ship, but now that you mention it....
Thanks for the tips guys. That cloud bugs me too. Luckily I did shoot a horizontal of this. I'll do some playing around and repost.
Thanks again,
Paul
