If I was going to put my 100-400 in my pack in a lens case should I use the case that came with the Camera or get a new case with more padding?
What case do you guys use for the 100-400?
I have seen that the Lowepro 5S is the case suggested for the 100-400 but the size seems a little large. Is there a more compact lowepro case for this lens? Seems like it should fit in their "lens case 3" with the hood reversed. Has anyone tried this?
Thanks!

I have a Lowepro back pack, model forgotten, and a Lowepro Slingshot, the latest and largest, I just put my 100-400 in these. No problem so far. Yes, I have had the packs fall over and drop from a relatively low hight, though not by choice. I have had no problem. Since I carry all my other camera gear in these packs when I am out on a shoot, I don't see the need to use the case that the lens came with. Besides, it takes up too much room. After the first time out, basically to try out hte lns and make sure everything was working the way it was supposed to, I put the case up and would have to look to find where I hid it. The Lowepro packs are very well constructed and padded. This also applies to other camera packs. So, I would not worry on that accord.

I haven't put the 100-400 back in its case since I bought it (except for one trip to Canon for some warranty service.) It either stays on one of my bodies or, when I have to swap it out, it goes into my padded camera backpack and is safe there. When not shooting, I reverse the hood and stow it in the pack attached to the body in a compartment that fits it just right, and I've never had any problems.
Thanks guys. With getting the Sigma 180mm macro the 100-400, or the 180mm, will be in my pack. What I'm wanting is a lens case that will hold either of them securely and safely BUT one that is just the right size. I'm not really wanting a big oversized case for the lens in storage.
I'm not going to be using a dedicated camera pack. I'm going to put my stuff in a regular hiking pack. This is the reason for my question.
Thanks!

Kyle, then the case from Canon should be perfectly adequate to absorb the occasional bumps and knocks a backpack gets out on the trails. My padded camera backpack offers no more protection than the Canon case.
