Hi,
Since I picked up a 40D about a month ago I have had numerous enquiries re the higher ISO performance, let me say it is far better than previous xxD cameras... but follow some simple rules the 'normal' 100, 200, 400 range is fine, for better dynamic range and less noise take the 160 route, i.e. the rating that is a reduction of the 100, 200 etc range, avoid the amplified 125 range...
Hope all this makes sense... my 40D has ISO 640 set as its default... it works very nicely, this is an image from when I was testing, not great but Lapwings make great test subjects..
All the best

Good God Phil - a camera that can take pictures - what ever will they think of next...?
It looks nearly as good as a D300 - I'm astonished

Nice Phil, would not consider using 640 on my 1d2 after results at the weekend. Mind you, my exposure skills are pretty crap, so suspect someone would better skills could get better results than I can out of it.

Hi Phil
Lovely image - like you I really like my 40D and although originally purchased as back up for my 1DIII I can see me using it quite a bit!
