As promised here's a male one from the other day.
By this time I was having the same problem as Stewart had, the reeds were swaying around so much focusing became a real pain.
Techs
Canon 30D
100-400 + 1.4x @ 560mm
Iso 200
1/800 @ f5.6
Hand held (as was previous shot)
Slight crop for comp.

Like the composition on this and the way the bird dominates the scene. Lighting is perfect.
Wonderful, the only nit is the out of focus read in front is a tad distracting, although to be fair by the time you have repositioned all the vegetation to suit, the has bird generally flown away
I have not seen one of these for years, shame as the Tay Read beds contain a good population but are not so accessible.
Which 1.4 TC do you use? The results are better than I expected. I take it the 100 - 400 is the Canon L IS
All the Best

Hi Bob,
I love this shot! The bird certainly dominates. Cracking lighting and composition.
