A local cultural organization has recently purchased several D40X's for student use. Spare batteries weren't ordered. With my D2X there is excellent battery performance even at -40C. My wife's 5400 packs in in after about fifteen minutes even at -20C.
before ordering second batteries perhaps someone here might have D40X cold weather experience they might share.

I have the D80. The coldest I've been out with it was -25F. It did fine. When I leave the camera on a tripod for long periods of time in double digit cold, I usually pop the battery cover door open and take out the battery. I keep it in an inside pocket.

One thing to consider is that the D40x batteries are rated for about 1/10 the number of images that the D2X batteries are. Both will be affected by cold weather, but the effect is likely more immediate on the D40 battery.
Peformance of my D2X batteries far exceeds that of my old D70. Kent's strategy is the same one I used for my D70 - keep at least one spare in a warm pocket. In very cold temperatures, I would keep both batteries in my pocket until I was ready to start shooting.
