Camping in Big Sur

I am planning a trip to Big Sur this weekend. Anyone have advice for selecting a campground? Anyone have a preferred campsite? This will be my first time to Big Sur, so any advice would be appreciated.

Pfiefer Big Sur campground is beautiful if you like being in the trees. Can be a bit cool because not too much sun gets in, but it is gorgeous. It is also toward the northern end of Big Sur, which would be convenient coming in from Santa Rosa.

No insight on the established campsites, but I've always preferred driving up into the National Forest up Nacimiento-Ferguson (there's also another road that I can't recall its name right now). It may be a little further than most, but there are some very pretty areas up there and because its national forest land, dispersed camping is allowed (although a campfire permit is required). Some of the dirt roads up there are 'seasonal' (Nacimiento-Ferguson is paved, but the roads that branch off of it are not - if you're wondering, the times I've driven those roads (when they were dry in spring and summer) I've only encountered a few places where 4wd was necessary) so I can't verify if this time of year they are actually 'open' and these areas are accessible.

Benjamin, there are numerous public and private camp grounds available in the Big Sur area. Stop at the River Inn (restaurant and retail area) and ask about camping, I'm sure they will direct you to campgrounds. The River Inn is located on Hwy 1, north side of the highway about 4 miles inland from the Big Sur Lighthouse; very easy to find.
