Canon 40D Any Good?

I am strongly considering getting a 40D as a supplement to my 1D Mark 2. After waiting and waiting for the 1D Mark 3 situation to settle I do not have confidence enough to go there. My MK2 has about 20,000 actuation's and still works fine (knocking on wood). My back up camera has been my old 10D which my wife uses a lot. I would like to get a more up to date camera for Gail to use and also give a quality supplement to my 1DMK2.

There has been some discussion of AF issues with the 40D. However, most of what I read is pretty positive.

So, what has been the experience here? Those of you who shoot with a 40D - do you like it? Is the AF good? Should I consider buying it soon?

Thanks for all your help.

Ed,

This from Micheal Reichmann of Luminous Landscape reflecting on this years PMA.

"Because the camera business is now very much the semiconductor business we will continue to see exponential growth. This means higher resolution sensors, larger sensors, and lower cost sensors. I have little doubt that within 1 – 2 years we will have cameras with full frame sensors of about 16MP for under $1,000. (Drop me a line on Dec 31, 2009 and let me know if I was right or not. My guess is that this is, if anything, a conservative forecast.)"

I don't know whether he is on the money but do believe he is in the ballpark. Unless it is absolute necessity, I'm waiting a bit before contemplating a new body.

Cheers,
Dave

There will ALWAYS be something better coming down the track. Received wisdom is buy the best you can now and then stop reading camera reviews.

HI Ed, I'm also looking at buying the 40D for a backup. The good news is the price is coming down. B&H has a special running for 1,149.. I have several friends who have the 40D and are really happy with it especially for its price range. I'm going to wait until the end of March or first of April before I purchase one as my heavy shooting starts then. Most reviews I've read have been positive.

The 40D is going to be a huge upgrade against the 10D. That camera was nice when it first came out, but the technology has greatly improved since then.

As a backup body, the two weaknesses it has is that it is not a 1 series body (but hey, it's a far less expensive backup!), and the fact you have pay for it. Beyond that, it is hard to see a serious downside. especially when compared with the 10D.

I have been very happy with my 40D. I now have the 1DMlll (with the upgrade), but still use the 40 quite a bit. I got the 40D as a replacement for the 10D, and couldn't belierve the changes and improvements that they had made.

The 40D is a great camera worthy of all the praise it gets, and Onecall has a real nice deal on them right now. Regards.

I love my 40D. I upgraded from a 20D and thought it was worth it. I really like the spot metering, larger LCD display, and RGB histogram. It's also a wee bit larger than the 20D so it fits my hands better. Having 10 vs 8 megapixels is a bonus. I initially had a problem with autofocus, so Canon tech support had me reset it to factory defaults and that fixed things. Files sizes are much larger than my 20D due to the extra 2 megapixels and the 14bit A/D. I don't think you'd be disappointed with a 40D.
