Common Snipe- Gallinago Gallinago
Hi Guys,

Had planned to go to Belgium today to get some shots of Short-eared Owls, but unfortunately that trip got cancelled...
So trying to make the best of things i went to my favourite nature reserve just around the corner of my home and searched for some Snipes wich i had seen earlier this month. The funny thing is that their camouflage is so darn good that they can not be seen with just your eyes and you need a big lens just to spot them. So when i was taking these pictures there where some people looking at me as if i was crazy taking pictures of these dry reed-stems....

Greetings,

Jeroen Stel

I know what you mean about spotting snipe and this demonstrates the point very well. Even the long straight beak plays a part in the camo here.

Nice one, shows the bird well in its environmental setting.

Hi Jeroen,

Very interesting capture this. Lovely light on the bird.

The way you captured it in the environment is great - like the foreground.

Nice environmental image Jeroen, shows how hard they can be to spot... I do feel that it looks a tad contrasty though... I know you have mentioned before that you are Mac based and the difference in the displays... but that really is not true these days... Mac screens should be calibrated and profiled exactly the same as PC screens...

All the best
