I have been lurking for months - working too many days and having the winter blues. I thank all of you who are faithful posters. You keep me inspired when it seems like forever before I'll be out in the field again.
Thursday morning, headed out to Nisqually with my 40D and my trusty 300 mm with 1.4 extender determined to really shoot up the place and just have fun. I noticed that the 40D focus seems more touchy, and feels more difficult to get right on than with the 20D. Other than that, solid and good.
Easily identified 10+ species of birds. Saw a Great Horned Owl - one of a nesting pair already incubating, eagles, 2 hawks, a falcon, sparrows, wrens, and bunches of geese and ducks. The bittern was elusive this time.
Anybody care to guess what these are?

Glad to have you post a photo Janet! Dabbling is so interesting to watch in real time, but hard to capture on film. You've done a good job here. I'll go with Green-winged Teal.

Right on John. I guess that little slash of green must have given it away. These along with a group of Shovelers were feasting on the flooded field. Nothing artistic in these shots, but the viewing was quite enjoyable and I got to work the cobwebs off my equipment. I'm headed out again tomorrow a.m. I've got a hankering for a 500 mm glass now.
I've decided that along with can't be too thin or too rich, I can't have too long a lens! Too bad it ain't happening to soon.
