After a couple of weeks of hard-core panning practice (F15Es at 500kts etc from Welsh mountain tops, see my blog for link) the Herons at St Albans seemed slow and very easy to keep up with!
The Heronry is in full swing with some still building and others already incubating.

Thats a cool shot
A play around with the "shadow/highlight" tool to brighten up the underside of the wings would improve this even more IMO.

I like your set of these, makes me want to locate a herons nest. Definitely slower that F15's,

Hi Nigel,
Funnily enough I was only reading your blog yesterday about your Heron images. Very nice shot and agree re the underwing.
Regards
Rob
PS Have you been up to the White Crowned Sparrow yet? Was thinking of going up tomorrow, Just wondering if you knew how showy it was and within range of a 600 and 1.4 x conv??

Thanks all, I've just updated the blog with new shots of Herons, Mallards, Magpie and Coot, all taken yesterday. The biggest problem at St Albans is the sheer number of people who want to talk to you, and it breaks your concentration, generally at the point when the best action is happening......... frustrating!
I'm not so sure on the shadow/highlight issue, on my calibrated LaCie monitor this looks just about spot-on; S/H tool is not one of my favourites either, I always feel it makes images look flat and generally adds noise. The shots of Herons over the water have the benefit of some fab bounced light up the underside!

Hi Nigel
Always nice when a flight shot has some added interest!

Now I can see you are just trying to compensate for not taking an aircraft image for a day.
What would this represent.
Good looking image with added interest.
Lightening the underwing may give it something else but think its ok as it is.:toast
Bye the way I aint going bald yet. :
