Female Ptarmigan
Taken last week on Cairngorm top along the Coire an Sneachda ridgeline running to Cairn Lochan. The rising sun had just reached over the mountain and had started to illuminate the northern side.

600mm/Tpod
2000'/F4/400asa
exposed for the whites, normal PS and a 2:1 crop

Hi Tom,

Love the lighting and the white's have been controlled well, Love the darkened snow in the BG, giving it a lovely blue hue.

Regards

Very striking pic, I like the way the tight cropping emphasises the birds crouch, great colour as well.

I guess it was bloody cold up there Tom.
Normally part alluminated subject might be a no no but this works well, bit like the usherette shining her torch on you and asking for your ticket.  :toast:

Sorry Tom, but for me the shadow cut is just a bit too severe. I can see what Major is saying and I have looked several times but I still find it not quite right. The pose and viewpoint I like a lot but.........

Lovely shot Tom, the whites are really held, the BG really adds effect. :toast:

Like the composition and the lighting. Loads of impact. In an exhibition this would be difficult to ignore.

Really effective. I love the crouch and partial illumination and pano style crop. A great picture.

Hi Tom,

An unusual image and by the above comments a subjective one too!

Personally I like it. The lighting, pose and the eye really works well but the crop doesn't work for me though. (Needs a little more room at the top).

Beautiful detail in the feathers-the blueness makes it totally different-like it

I love this picture, that shadow on the bottom half of the bird suggests a secretive species coming out into the open. The blue Bg is great too.
