Another from my friend's hide in South Wales. Bright sunshine and a bright perch. I didn't manage quite enough DOF but was pleased with this as a first woodpecker shot.
30D + Sigma 500mm f4.5
ISO 200, 1/1000th sec, f7.1, -2/3 EV
Cropped about 1/4 off mainly the top in PS2, USM, slight levels adjustment.

Hi Tim,
Very nice shot which has been well exposed with good detail in blacks and whites. If this is a hide set up try a different perch, perhaps a suitable bit of silver birch with holes drilled into it to put meal worms in.

Great pose and BG - I think you could improve the image by darkening the light areas of the perch!

I agree about the perch highlights too. Great image though. Not had anything near as good as this

Thanks all. Yes, the brightness of the perch is a pain. Perhaps I'll have a go in Photoshop at improving it.

Cracking shot Tim!
I think toning this down a tad would really improve the shot!
Well done!

Beauriful shot of a bird I have yet to see. I agree about the highlights on the perch.

Great shot. That white streak up the perch leads nicely to the bird, but I agree that it could stand toning down just a little. An absolute beauty. Eric
