I will be headed to NANPA in a couple days and am going to stop and spend a night or two on my way and hopefully take some photos. I am looking for a nice spot within an hour or two of I-10 where I can camp and photograph for a night or two. I haven't ever traveled in LA so would love some suggestions.
CORRECTION! Apparently I wasn't thinking when I posted this... I-10 runs from Jacksonville, FL all the way to California, passing through both the state of Louisiana (the LA I was refering to) and Los Angeles, CA. Sorry about that!
I no longer speak LA after so many years here in Alaska, but if time and distance permitted I'd sure head for Joshua Tree or Anza Borrego. Closer to LA there's Big Bear in the San Bernardino Mountains.

Hank, I love it. By LA I meant Louisiana. I didn't even think that I-10 continues all the way to California. Thanks though!
So lets try that again, anyone know anywhere in Louisiana to Photograph?
Yup, I-10 starts just about at the Santa Monica pier and runs straight east through LA (as in Las Angeles), all the way out the southeastern border of the state, and evidently into LA (as in Louisiana).
Kinda like saying Icy Bay in Alaska, of which there are something like 32 wearing that official name.
NOW would probably be a good time to reserve a campsite.
About 40 minutes south of downtown Los Angeles.
If it's landscapes you're after.... maybe a drive to Joshua Tree National Park. About 1 1/2 hours west of LA. Wear your long underwear. It gets cold at night.

Hey Drew.
Since you appear to be a birder, I was wondering if you have seen this site: http://www.camacdonald.com/birding/uslousiana.htm
It may lead to something ?

One other thing, the sandhill cranes should still be in the rice/corn fields of Cheneyville, LA near Alexandria. About a 2 hour drive from I-10 if you are interested. A poor man's Bosque del Apache, if you will. If you want wildlife and not just birds, I-10 runs right through the Atchafalaya River Basin. Don't know about campsites though. And there are things in the ARB that may take an interest in you as well at certain times of the year. Probably not so much now though. Good luck!

There is camping, but not tent camping at the beach here:
