Male Goldeneye Displaying
I took this image at Martin Mere the other week, Goldeneyes are beautiful Ducks and I love photographing them during the spring as they do their spectacular courtship ritual. This image is one I have been after for years as it is really fast and you don't get much warning.

Canon EOS 1D MK11, 500mm Lens, F4, 1/1600, ISO 200

Hi Danny

Hope you're not waiting for a critique! This is exquisite in terms of light, wb, colour, speed, contrast..........oh and the pose is pretty good too. For us mere mortals would you describe the shooting position please.

Hello Brian

I was lying flat on the ground with my camera and lens resting on a beanbag.
Hope that helps.

Cheers Danny

Is that displaying or a last death throw? Curious stuff, nicely captured of course.

I have been watching this behaviour for the last few weeks, very difficult to capture especially on such a large lake-you have caught the display beautifully-one of the few images that work with the bird exiting the frame

Hi Danny
Was this bird a wild bird or was it a captive bird where you added a primery?
Best wishes
Frederic

Hello Frederic

This is a captive bird that was photographed in the pens at martin mere, it had both primery feathers so I supose it could have flown away but they are very tame there and most of them had been clipped but a few were not. I have found that many of the ducks at both martin mere and slimbridge have not been pinonned but are very tame so I presume they are captive birds. Shame on you for thinking I would mislead and add a primary feather.
