First real post here. Just joined.

A few weeks ago was playing in the Gorge during that cold snap we had. I was amazed when I went to Latourell Falls and saw sticks with about 5" of ice wrapped around them. Natures Popsicles if you will. Mental note, bring cleats next time. That path was nothing but pure ice.

Roman: Looks like you needed spikes for your tripod as well. Very nice first post! If possible I might have attempted to position the top of the falls behind a clump of trees since it disappears into the sky, but it's not a big deal. Love the yellow lichen.

Beautiful color. Nicely composed with the icicles in the foreground and the water flowing off to the right. The top of the falls is a challenge, perhaps trying to darken the sky a bit would help the falls stand out against it.

Thanks Marc and Larry!

The top of the falls was unavoidable.I was limited to a space of about 3 feet to get this shot on the icy trail (without cleats on) My personal ethic is not to edit things into or out of a shot that wasnt there. (I have one area where I play with the moon in those kind of shots...but I usually disclose it straight up)

This left me with the option of either chopping off the top of the falls...or living with it and setting up the shot to crop it to the point it didnt become a distraction.

I chose the latter of the two.

I woud have welcomed a clump of trees at the top....lol.

Maybe next year I will go a little better prepared for the ice...

Thanks again for all the positive feedback and the warm welcome.

Roman,
Welcome and nice first post. A couple of years ago I went to these falls during our late Feb. cold snap. I got on my rear and slid down to the bridge. Then I had to crawl on my hands and knees just to get up and away from the ice. I had about 10 grand in photo gear with me so I wasn't going to take any chances. I also thought of having metal golf cleats. Better yeat a couple breezed by me with crampons.

For 18.00 you can now buy Yaktrax to walk in cases like this.....

Sweet shot, Roman and welcome to the group !!

LOL Crampons would have worked as well. Would have been a bit rough on the trail though before the ice.

Hey John, thanks for the tip...I will pick them up ASAP....put them in the back of the Jeep. You should let me know when you want to go back out and get a free helicoptor ride. :jump:

Hey Roman!

Good to see ya here! Those icy branches are surreal...one of these days I WILL have to make it up there during the ice season.

And I do already have Yaktrax...

Hey Kevin! Did you submit any work for the Japanese Garden/ProPhotoSupply large print event? Would love to see some of your stuff over there.

Welcome to the group, Roman. I have the same grip about the sky... If you cropped it out and focused more on the popsicles it might be nice.

That would be funny going down there with full on crampons.

Roman,

I entered, was considered, sent the file, and haven't heard anything since. So I dunno if I'm still in the running...I hope to stop by while it's going on to check out the posters.
