Paintbrush
Shot back in May when Mr Hudon and I made a trip out to the SW. I placed the rocks there, yup I did.

Well, that's pretty as a...

It's neat. I bet someone would love to put that up on their wall. I've been thinking of lensbaby shooting lately (not that I have one) and I wonder how shots like this would become more artsy?

As you can tell, it's been eons since I've shot something landscapish...WAAAY too much time with the printer testing (but that's another story).

I like this a lot...the colors are very nice and while punchy...still natural. The composition does look a little staged...but hey...it works for the most part...nice balance. One of the things I would have done is leveraged the crack above the flowers a bit more, maybe coming in at an angle deviding up some negitive space and the flowers a little closer to one of the corners. This would stop the rocks from detracting from the flowers and put the subject a little more squarly as what drew you there in the first place....and told the story of the plant growing in the crack a little better.

Just my .02.....VERY nice work and well done.

Awesome shot, Rick - you handled the reds well - post this in flora if you haven't already.... :toast:

Rick - This is one of the best Paintbrush specimens I've seen, and I've seen a few. Not sure about the stone placement; it's a matter of taste I suppose. But that little rivulet thing that the 'brush has planted itself in is pure magic. Definitely a photogenic flower.

Yeah, the rocks look too staged. The rest looks nice though, maybe just a hair too yellow.

The rocks add weight to the comp, but I don't think they belong Rick. The line in back of the paintbrush may have been fun to play with instead. I may have framed the subject more off-center and again used that line to the back of the paintbrush. What was the saturation level on this one?

Didn't you place this rock also?

I like it but would loose the stones to simplify the image. Stones draw attention away from the flower and interesting texture and color of the rock.

Analog cloning is ok Rick. you won't go to hell for that

Anyway, I like the way the surrounding color compliments the PB. I can see this hanging in a waiting room/reception area somewhere.

Rick.. Was this shot in Zion. They actually call the paintbrush there"ZION" paintbrush. I agree with the comment on the rocks but this is a great image. I really like how you didn't over process the color in the rocks. I see a lot of that going on these days and don't care for it. The muted earth tones is what is is, not any more or less. Nice job.

I would have never guessed the rocks were staged......the color is amazing and in my opinion this is one of the best I have seen from the area.....Well done Rick! :toast:

Thanks for the comments folks and terribly sorry I didn't reply sooner. I've been way busy and am currently outta town.
I did stage the rocks and they do look staged, but as stated above, it has some balance I think. Roman: I did work some more with that crack and no rocks...I'll post those in the next week...but I agree with your thoughts. Mark: Ya know I staged em all, dawg! Jack: this isn't Zion, but it's in Utah. I'll be damned if I remember the exact side of the road, but Mark would I'm sure.
