Just a shot to show people how the Wild Boar do so much damage.

I photographed a group of these on the Somerset Levels, you`d be gobsmacked at the amount of damage they do, and sometimes it seemed they were just having fun!

I`ve pictures of the Male but he always seemed to stay well back, simular to what Tom mentioned.

Hi Brian

I have to confess that I'm always slightly sensitive about the word 'damage' when it comes to our perceptions of certain species' natural behaviour. Certainly wild boar can eat and trample crops; certainly their foraging action can impinge on certain land use regimes but 'damage' is a human concept. The post-war conifer plantations that are so characteristic of many parts of northern Britain are biologically inert and could well do with some wild boar 'damage' to expose the ground to fresh seed and create greater structural diversity. One man's damage might be another's ecological change!
Just a view!

Nice behaviour shot Brian. I had no idea at all we had these on the Levels. I'd love them on my veggie patch - they seem to do a better job of digging than I do.

Cheers

Hi Pete,
I can see where your coming from, I still think the farmer would argue over the word damage, but like you said they are only doing what they do naturally, its like putting food in front of animal and then saying don`t eat it!

Nice behavioural. A pity for me that they are all so close together, but I am sure that there are more opportunities to be had, I would imagine that they are creatures of habit and fairly easy to find again?
