Dream Lake Ice
It's been awhile since I've posted anything! I've been lurking mostly and enjoying your posts. Busy times for me. My wife and I just welcomed our second child, a healthy baby girl, a month ago ... and now we're getting ready to move to southwest Montana next month. So I will representing Big Sky country here on the forum in a while - quite happily!

Here's a shot from last Saturday, taken on a hike to Dream/Emerald in RMNP. The famous ice offered some great shooting. 5d + 24-70mm.

Man, that's a beauty! Love the blue hues. Southwest Montana sure is a beautiful area. You'll have quite the array of photographic opportunities to explore there. Good luck on the move and congrats on the new bundle of joy!!

Wow Jesse,

That is Big News! Where abouts in SW Montana are you moving to, Bozeman, Butte, or? Have you guys been planning your move for a while now? It sounds like quite an adventure. You will be closer to Yellowstone, GTNP and GNP - not a bad combination. Plus you will have a lot more wildlife around you. And as an added bonus you could be probably do North Cascades National Park WA over a weekend trip.

I like the ice shot BTW. I have been wanting to get back there this winter soon. Thanks for the motivation!

Jesse,

Great shot, you must have read my mind since I am headed up to RMNP tomorrow. How long does it take you to hike in to Dream Lake? I know it is just over 2 miles but wasn't sure how much time to budget. Also, can the hike be made in the dark to get there for sunrise?

Good luck in Montana, it's a beautiful state. We expect to see some posts from up there.

This is outstanding. Not only do you have a great pattern, but you nailed the perspective - being able to follow the cracks and bubbles down into the ice gives this an amazing 3-D feel. I also like that there's a "hub" where the most prominent cracks converge/diverge - it's the difference between having an abstract pattern and having a random one; the former is usually more appealing to me . The crisp blues round it out perfectly.

Good luck with the move to Montana. Maybe we'll cross paths in Idaho, or over in the Beartooths.

Thanks for the feedback!

It's about a .5 to .75 hour hike, Evan. Less if you're in good hiking shape. It can definitely be hiked in the dark. Once you hit Nymph Lake, hike along the south shore to find the snowshoe trail that heads up the drainage directly to Dream Lake. It will be obvious.

Yes, we're headed for the Bozeman area. My wife is being recruited for a great job up there. We had been eyeing the area for awhile, but the sudden job opp was unexpected. Harold, we'll obviously have to touch base sometime soon.

Great ice shot Jesse!! Congrats on the new addition to your family and best of luck with the move. I know you'll have a great time capturing the beauty of that area of the Rockies and already can't wait to see what you come up with.

Great capture, beautiful lines and depth. Congratulations on the new addition to the family and I hope your move is flawless. Even though I'm losing a neighbor, your move will just expand my circle of friends in outlying areas. Best of luck!

Wonderful image Jesse! You know how I love the ice! In fact I had been on the fence for a while, but this image convinced me to head up to Estes late Friday night, and shoot the ice on Dream Lake Saturday AM. One word: wind! I shot anyway, and will post some when I get my film back.

Congrats on the family addition! And also on the big move! I really wish you all the best of luck!
