After we had a group of four siskins visit our garden on two occasions, but not stop to feed on the seed feeder, we decided to put up some thistle seed. Not wanting to buy a dedicated feeder on the off-chance that they would return, I made one out of a plastic bottle and two twigs. There were no further sightings of siskins or goldfinches, so we were planning to take down the ugly feeder (nothing else would touch the thistle seed- a robin was the only bird I saw try, and obviously wasn't interested).
Yesterday morning I found a pair feeding at the same time on the bottle feeder- they were there for about 5 minutes. Grabbed some shots through the kitchen window (double glazed)- birds were about 10 metres away.
Nikon D50, 500mm AI-P, Manfrotto 393 and 055, f/6.3, 1/320, ISO 1600, 40% left after crop, NR on background.

they're lovely looking birds aren't they. We've had an occasional female visit our feeders but she doesn't hang around for long and so far hasn't brought any of her friends

I agree these are beautiful birds - a small group has been visiting our garden in the past few days, but I have only had a chance in low light. Hope they stay for a while! Interested to see you feeder - I will be giving it a go.

Hi Ben,
Beautiful birds! Be interesting to see if you can produce more images without the feeder.

Lovely birds these. It always seems to me that they can take a while to find your feeders but usually become regulars once they have - at least until the weather picks up. Eric
