Has anyone used these before? Any thoughts? I would be using it with a 600 and and the 200-400...I have a D3 so I am thinking that it can make up for the loss of light, but wanted to see what people think of them...any comments would be greatly appreciated...thank you...Nate

Yes, I use one- a circular polarizer- in my 300/2.8. Awfully glad I have it. I forget how fast the lenses are that you have, and you didn't say, but the only drawback is loss of an f-stop or two making the AF slow in conditions of lower light. Not sure even a D3 can make up for that... Hopefully, someone more expert than I will chime in with more info for you.

If you need a polarizer for use with a long lens, the "drop-in" is the most convenient to work with. The two-stop loss of light is a small price to pay for its capability.

The short summary is that if you need the polarizer, there really isn't any way around it. It is the one filter you can't fake in PS.

For a really big lens, like the ones you are suggesting, the price of the polarizer to cover the front element will buy you another lens. The big lenses also don't often have threads to attach one.

Nikon has a couple different 52mm drop in polarizers so make sure you get the right one: C-PL1L.

You don't just want the filter, but also the holder. Nikon makes a holder with a dial on it so that you can rotate the filter without having to take it out every time. Part number is CPL1L.

Hi Nathan,

This is great! I only asked this very same question yesterday on the UKNP with very little back!

So thanks for all the replies here - it's helped me make my mind up - I'm getting one!

Thanks to everyone who responded...I really appreciate it, and I hadn't thought about the loss of light affecting the focusing speed...thanks...time to spend some more money i guess..

Nikon C-PL1L Drop-In Circular Polariser 52mm has been discontinued!!!

Any other alternatives?

UPDATE: I have fortunately found a supplier with some in stock so I've ordered two and had a discount as well!
