I recently bought a Canon 5D. Everything works great, I am thrilled with the performance of the camera. Recently though I have noticed when I download my files instead of IMG_0012.CR2 I get _MG_0012.CR2 anyone else run into that? and is it something I should be worried about? Like I said earlier the camera seems to be working fine, I'm just not sure what happened.

I don't have a 5D but this happened to me when I put my card in someone else's 1D MII who was gracious enough to let me take a shot.
The file opened fine, Thomas.
I tried googling the issue but I couldn't come up with a search argument that found anything.

It's obviously doomed and I would be happy to take it off your hands-I'll even pay the postage

Thanks Lance, the files are opening fine I was just wondering if this was the beginning of something.
Leann, you'll pay the postage? I've got your address around here somewhere
This may be a stupid response, but perhaps you fat fingered something in your camera settings? My Nikons have the ability to change the filenames to what I want and to reset or change the numbering format. It would be possible for me to get in that area by mistake and delete or change a character or two by accident when trying to back out of that area.
So, I assume your camera has that same ability. Have you looked at that setting recently to see what is written in it? Or if you have and it appears correct, have you tried changing it to something else and shoot a few shots to see how they are named? Do they still wind up different from the setting? Also, you did not mention what the filename was while in-camera before downloading (but maybe it was implied that they were correct in-camera - I felt like maybe you were saying what they "usually" look like after downloading).
Like I said, this may be a stupid question; but coming from a customer service background, we sometimes find the answer is much simpler than expected! Hope yours is that easy! And if you have done all the above already, then please excuse the response here!javascript:%20x()
Wow. I've been seeing the exact same problem for a few weeks with by Rebel XTi. I assumed I had fat fingered a setting and planned to get back, find it, and fix it. When I saw your message I went and looked. The file names on the card are _MG_nnnn. The interesting thing is some are correct (IMG_nnnn) and others are messed up.
I did a little Goggling and discovered that the Canon cameras will change the file name depending on the color space you're using. IMG_nnnn files use the sRGB colour space, _MG_nnnn files use the AdobeRGB colour space. If you put the camera on one of the fully automatic settings it reverts back to sRGB (default). Mystery solved.

Thanks Troup and Richard... it was a combination of both your suggestions It was the colour space setting, I remember changing it but then I obviously didn't change it oops.

Thanks again for the help and suggestions!
Leann looks like I'll be keeping it after all
