Bit of an unusual one. Thousands (and I mean thousands) of dead Starfish on the beach at Sandwich Bay, Kent. The line of dead Starfish stretched as far as you could see in both directions. A copy of the image has been sent to a collegue who is investigating the possible cause.
I once went to Rhossili beach, Gower, and found loads of Starfish and other sealife washed up; but they were spread much more widely over the beach, and nowhere near this number or density. Amazing and rather sad shot.
Whats more they are all thes same type of starfish and look like Asterias rubens. They breed in spring but they are known to form very large aggregrations in shallow water may be the tidal action was more dynamic than usual during this period.
An amazing event to witness, great shot too, with lovely depth to show the extent of this wreck of Starfish.
Unimportant nit is that the horizon is a bit wonky
Amazing and rather sad to witness... I would agree with Tom over the species and possible cause, I' sure Brett will have a good inkling, I can also check with our scientists here...
