Heron
A heron shot with a difference. Most of my heron photos are at ground level but when I spotted this one perched on a magnificent old oak tree I loved it straight away. Another dark dull day so I was lucky to get away with slow shutter speed.

Hi Robert,

Lovely shot! You never mentioned whether this was full frame or not. I like this in the environment shot but would consider cropping for more impact, if and only, if you can do so. As it is a little small in the frame - I wouldn't be too hasty and crop that tree out though as that'll help you're composition.

Hello Paul,
thanks for the comments. Yes it is full frame and I did actually try cropping it but then I kept coming back to the full image. I think perhaps I like the impact of the tree as much as (or even more so) than the heron itself. It's probably the nearest thing I have to a reasonable landscape picture !!

Robert, lovely moody and unusual shot, I like the tree and cannot think where you could crop without losing some of the impact of the twisted trunk, perhaps slightly on the right to make a narrower frame.

I like it as it is :toast: :toast:

great shot Robert, that twisted trunk is great

i wouldn't crop a thing, the subject size doesn't matter in this type of shot in my opinion as long as the environment is interesting and the subject "pops", you've checked both boxes here

perhaps warm it up a little in white balance and increase the contrast but then thats just personal preference

again great shot

Love this, don't crop it its great as is, and I really like the Heron's pose looking back into frame, it helps to make the image contained and whole.
Good work.

Very nice picture. The impact of the old tree is great  Well done.

That is really nice... another vote not to crop, often we try to get images that are perhaps too close and you lose all sense of environment... I am a great fan of this type of image and know that I am guilty of not taking enough...

A heron image with a difference. Love the setting and the contrast in size, with the heron looking almost tiny in comparison to the huge, mature oak. Nicely composed too.
