Things have been slow for a few days so I decided to redesign our Ramblin Lamb Photography website galleries. If you don't mind please feel free to peruse the site and lemme know what works and what doesn't work for you.
I built the gallery page and the galleries themselves from a web gallery template for Lightroom. This has been both the easiest redesign and the most fulfilling results!! A bit of point and click in Lightroom and some good ole fashion coding in Adobe Dreamweaver CS3. It still needs some refinement here n there - is it ever REALLY "done"???!! I did all this in just a couple of days in between the rest of my daily noise.
So please DO kick the tires and spin the wheels of our site!!
Nice work on your new website. My only nit is to lose the frame and "mat" on your thumbnails. They make the thumb pages too busy and without them you can devote more real estate to the thumbnails with larger thumbnails. They really pop on a plain black or dark grey background.
Was it easy to migrate the Lightroom pages into DW? I have both progs but have been slow to try them together.
I'd say keep the slide mat, but make it darker, so it stands out just a tad from the background color. The uniformity holds the page together fluidly, but the contrast does draw a little attention away from the pictures themselves.
Nice images Rick, the site as a whole looks great. My only nit is when I go to one of your galleries, the spacing is so compact it creates an optical illusion of dots between images. Other than my eyes going a bit wonky, it detracts from the photos as my eyes follow the dots. I'm not sure if the spacing or the black border creates the illusion.
Overall the site looks great. A couple of minor suggestions...1) make the images of you guys larger in the Contact Us section and 2) get rid of the Contact Us link in the Galleries section as it doesn't really fit there and you already have an easily accessible section for that.
I like your approach, but think that the overall design would be a bit cleaner if you were to make the text a bit smaller on the primary menu on the left side of the page, bold it, and then use CSS to remove the underlining.
I'd also keep any image borders to a hairline, or at least no more then 1 pixel in width.
Where you have white text on black, I think it would be a bit more "refined" if the text was a light gray . . . sort of an off-silver or pewter in appearance. I'd also use a "stately metallic" color tone set for the menu items . . . something a bit "understated" to put the photos into a more upper-end gallery look and feel.
. . . But then, I'm perhaps a bit picky about these things.
