I realize this is a bit of a long shot, but i'll be in barcelona for a week over easter and was wondering whether i should bother carting the big guns out. My main experience in Spain has been limited to Doñana in Seville and Monfragüe. Are there good places for shooting wildlife (with a camera of course) within an hr's drive of Barcelona itself or should i just pack empty suitcases and go shopping?

Have'nt been here myself, but looked it up the other day as I spend a fair amount of time in BCN,looks reasonable and should be an easy drive.

May be OK for the endemics, but the migrants are only just starting to move through. If the weather is prolonged poor conditions in Spain/Gibralter region - wet and windy - nothing moves thro'

I spent a fair bit of time in Alicante region last year and in early April it was very thin on birds, where as in early May the previous year all the passerines and waders were on territory. Easter is again very early this year so you are in the lap of the weather gods whether the migrants have arrived.

So depends upon what your target species is and where you are thinking about going - ie if I were you I would research potential sites a bit more first

If its any help, I was in Italy last week, Ferrara to be exact, sat in a park minding my own business when a Peregrine took a pigeon about 20 yards to my right, I was glad I had the 80-400VR lens with me

Hopefully I got some useable shots from then, moral is always have a camera with you

thanks for all the advice guys. I was hoping for more of the local endemics especially the birds of prey, bee-eaters and hoopoes which we seem to see so little of over here in england. Not after waders and migrants as such. The thing is, having never been to barcelona before, i really don't know what to expect. Thanks for the website stu. Its a good starting point. Anyone else has any tips on decent locations nearby, preferably within 500mm range.

Bee-eaters are migratory, Hoopoes are endemic in southern Spain and Portugal.
