I am trying to figure out a good way to mount a flash unit on my Manfrotto 393. A while back I came across a webpage that had this set up and the photographer had shown a variety of ways of doing this - some were clearly DIY, but others seemed to be only semi-DIY, in that off-the-shelf products were modified to work. If anyone has any ideas I'd love to hear about them.
I can't address your question, but thanks for tipping me off to the 393. I have a Wimberly sidekick, but it isn't really steady enough for my longest lenses. I've been reluctant to pony up for a real Wimberly, but this Manfrotto gimbal might work for me...
I have no complaints. The 393 is a solid support for a sigma 50-500 even when coupled to 2x extender. I am using a Gitzo 3540LS which is not supposed to be the best choice (compared to the 3530) but again I have no complaints. I have taken sharp images at F8 and speeds as low as 1/40 with this setup, with the limiting factor on IQ being the quality of the lens rather than camera shake.
