Hey there, I was hoping that any photographers familiar with Kansas City area could recommend any locations that have good waterfalls. I would be interested in anything within a 2 hours drive. If you have something in mind outside of that range, let me know anyway, I may put in my notebook for a later time

Hi Chad, the most prominent waterfall I know of in Kansas is at the outer limits of your two hour range. It's called Pillsbury Crossing and it is located about 8 miles southeast of Manhattan. Easy access, just a bit of a drive from KC.

While there are no prominent waterfalls, Mill Creek is a ideallic setting and accessed via Streamway Parks in Johnson County. Streamway Parks has a 17 mile long continuously paved walking/biking path and for the most part parallels the creek from the Kansas River on the north all the way to Olathe, KS on the south. This entire park is in the KC metro area and there are many trailheads along the route.

Hope that helps and if you do find out about other waterfalls nearby I'd appreciate hearing about them! Good hunting out there. :wavey:

Chad, there are few waterfalls in this region until you get into Arkansas where the sandstone ledges and great watersheds come into play. In your region, the most reliable and easiest to photograph is the Crown Center Hotel Waterfall. I have not been there but I understand that it is five stories tall, indoors, and complete with vegetation and devoid of ticks and poison ivy. What more could one ask for...

You can find it at Crown Center, 25th and Main, east of Union Station, K.C. Someday, I hope to make a pilgrimage to this venerable site.

Best,
Don

Good luck in your search. Wayne mentioned Pillsbury Crossing, which I posted pics of here and in ESS forum last month. Also at the far end of your 2 hr range would be the outlet at Chase County Lake, outside Cottonwood Falls. A couple of us posted pics last spring/summer on this board.

Thanks guys for all your suggestions.
I will look into the Pillsbury crossing and more of Mill Creek. I have seen Mill Creek, but havent explored it a whole lot. I have seen the Crown Center waterfall, but it's only 2 stories... not 5, and while its pretty, its also surrounded by conference rooms and such, so it would make it tough to set much up there.

Thanks again!
Chad
