While suffering through the Lord of the Rings trilogy I couldn't help wondering how they accomplished the "effect" seen in the colors/tonal range. As a photographer I don't care much about film, but do wonder how I could accomplish the same effects while post-processing some of my own images. I assume there are a million ways to accomplish some of these effects and am looking for some good resources (books, websites, etc) to learn, and then experiment. I assume this will at the very least, involve layer masking and other techniques. Any help or guidance with this would be greatly appreciated. Cheers.

David, I don't have any specific recommendations, but any good book on Photoshop for photographers should have some good info. That might not stray into the kinds of effects you're talking about. Also, searching the web for post processing suggestions can get some cool tutorials - like lomo effects, or cross processing effects.
And if you have the extended editions of the movies, there's some info on how they post-processed in the "Extras" DVDs. At times it was as tedious as going frame by frame through a scene and lightening someones face for instance.
