I have a question: could you be able to recommend to me some web services that provide templates for a pro-photographer's web site?
It would have to include:
- galleries in a very nice professional way
- guest books and contacts
- page with pricing, etc.
- online payments and transactions
I am also looking for your recommendation for existing pro-sites that would give me some inspirations.
Thanks
Cezar

Check out Zenfolio and SmugMug. They have a lot of what you are looking for.

C,
I have mt site done by a web designer. I haven't been happy with the cookie cut ones I see advertised. I like Mark Hudons, Kit Kat Youong's, Guy Tal's, Michael Anderson, Tony Kuyper's a lot. All these links are on my website under links. Also check out Michael Gordon's new site ( www.michael-gordon.com )
My rule of thumb is no more than 3 clicks to get to the final destination, and the home page needs to pop.
Good luck.

Cezar, I'd recommend checking out http://www.widerangegalleries.com/. Jack Brauer and Jesse Speer - both NPNers - create sites ranging from economical template-based designs to full custom designs. All of their sites are database driven which will greatly simplify updating. Check out the testimonials page to see examples of their work, which includes Michael Gordon's site that Jack G. mentioned - very nice.

The one difference I've found between Zenfolio and SmugMug (besides price) is that SmugMug has file downloads as an option.

I've been happy with www.foliosnap.com. You don't need to know any code to build and maintain your site, and it has a very clean and professional appearance.

Cezar

if you could go without a guestbook and use paypal, i'm a php/mysql web developer and could throw you together a site in a week or two, my rate is $60/hour probably in the $1200-$2500 depending if you design it or me. it would include a backend where you can upload photos, change captions, sort the photos by drag and drop, categorize photos etc. and you would get the site that you want. i mean other than the guestbook and paypal. only because i've looked into tons of guestbooks and i don't like any of them and most shopping carts want you to have the whole site within the shopping cart software.

some examples:
http://medina-photo.com of course
http://pdxvr.com
http:/bhumsiva.com
http://andrae-imports.com
http://mybeibei.com

each of these sites has a 'backend' for adding or editing information

Thanks guys for the response. I reviewed the recommended sites and I think that Zenfolio is the choice I am now looking for. The price is acceptable, I don't have to worry about the printing as my experience with it is very limited, and the only thing I am not sure about is protecting the photographs from theft downloading. They are saying that the gallery images are available to view in a full resolution and it worries me a bit. I need to research that.
For an advanced amateur who is just entering the business I think it is a good starter site.
If you have any other recommendation I will be very grateful.
Thanks guys,
Cezar Mart
