Eventaully aquired myself a Sigma 500mm 4.5 (cheers Kevin) and combined it up with a 40D. I haven't had a chance to get out and really give it a proper run, but inital indications are that it is a fine bit of kit. Here is a sample in gloomy light out my office window. C & C as always welcome.

very nice shot the rain looks great,
the perch does seem to weight the shot towards the left a bit but then that's probably just me
Cheers for the feedback folks. I have to say the 500mm prime makes a huge difference to what I have previously used. Also the 40D seems to be an excellent bit of kit. Here is another shot with a slightly less gloomy light. Cheers MJ
Hi MJ

I prefer the first one, which is a much more dynamic image because of the birds stance. I feel that a litle more sharpening wouldn't hurt, but nice all the same. I can see a line of noise around the second bird's bill, I think you just need to magnify the image while you are painting in the layer mask so that you can follow the bird's outline more closely. eric
