I've been agonising about which lens to get to fill my midrange shooting.

What lens would people like to see? I'm not talking about 1-5000mm f1 lenses the size of a fag packet, but realistic lenses which could exist.

I think my current desire would be a 100-300mm f4 lens with OS/VR but the same weight as the non VR.

Another would be a 400mm f5.6 like the Canon, its the only thing i miss which i had on my canon setup.

It already exists the 500 LIS just with a 0 knocked of the price tag... or reduced by x5 I am not greedy

Or even for the same price it is on the other side of the pond to be fair

A Canon 100-500mm f4 (or even a 100-400mm,200-400mm or 200-500mm) lens that's very sharp, fast focusing, close focusing and of consistent build and optical quality and that will take a 1.4X extender with minimal loss of quality (and a 2X extender, but that could be pushing it) . Reasonably priced and of a reasonable weight too

Nikon are already on to a winner with their 200-400mm which I currently own, :jump:
But maybe if they could come up with a sharper and faster focusing version of the 80-400mm, that would make life a little easier for me!

I'd like to see a lightweight version of the 200-400mm f/4 VR (This lens is over 3kg). I'd like to see one around 1/1.5kg to carry on a spare body when shooting with the 500mm. VR would be nice but not an absolute necessity!

Oh and it must have a lens collar!

Oh an Nikon ED 80-400 f2.8(-f4..maybe) that's as sharp as the older 80-200 f2.8 with or without VR and for less than the price of a family saloon car please.

A blisteringly sharp and fast focussing 100-400 f/4 DO so it is also shorter and lighter, with internal focussing - not a trombone that sucks dust in and blows back onto a sensor!

A Canon 400/2.8L IS in a Nikon fit.

200-400mm F4 Non-DO IS two touch with electronic focus disable.

Nikon already do that only £6300 400 f2.8 G AFS VR.
I would like a sigma 1.4 image stabilised telly converter that can be used on any none image stabilised lens.

Thets probably "do able" for a DX or 4/3 sensor phillip... cause the image circle is smaller... but unlukely they'd make one though

It's nowhere near as easy to handle as the Canon one though, the tripod foot is one of the worst I've ever used on any lens, oh and it's a couple of thousand £ overpriced

a 500 with a 50% concession for students

a 500 f5.6 IS to replace the 400 5.6 would be nice. Oh, and make it a non-L so hopefully the price will be lower. Heck, i'd even accept an EF-S lens.

How about a 2x converter that doesn't mean you loose two stops of light or reduces image quality?
Posted by Paul Gibbs on March 14, 2008 at 4:59 AM
I said realistic Jan  I think most peopel just want existing lenses cheaper rather than something new... I agree with Szekiat, though a Sigma 500mm f5.6 prime would be nice... Notice i say sigma so everyone could have it

Some quality wide angle zooms to replace the mediocre yet dated technology they keep pushing out would be good.

Hi Paul,

I have been thinking about this some more. A lightweight 600mm f/5.6 would be nice that weighs around 2/2.5kg and cost about £2000!

Hmm I think the price is probably too low, but the rest may be possible, i think a 500mm f5.6 VR for about 2kg though would be better in my mind?
