Curse of Elowah: The Sequel

Went back up to Elowah Falls yesterday for a reshoot, after battling the elements on Friday. The conditions were deceptively nice - overcast and cool. The stream levels had also dropped noticeably in two days - but not enough for the spray to be any less of a problem. I shot about 25 sets, with varying compositions, and somewhat longer exposures than on Friday. Then I came home and found that the CURSE of Elowah had struck again: all but 4 sets were hopelessly spotted with spray drops!

I had been pretty careful, too - bracketing from the bottom up, so that my most workable images would be least affected by the spray, and completely drying the lens between sets. But when I got home, I also realized that some vapor had developed inside the polarizer, adding to the mess. So... I'll be going BACK to Elowah for another reshoot, and to see what Mother Nature has in store next time...

This is among the shots that survived the spray - a rare vertical composition (for me, that is), taken at 1 second with a 11-22mm zoom set at 11mm. Comments and suggestions welcome!

It seems harsh and uninviting for some reason.

Not sure what that means, Mark - do you mean the composition or the color balance?

Color balance.

I like this comp.... Are you going Sunday by any chance?

Possibly, Ned - are you thinking of going up there? I think Sunday afternoon would work, weather permitting. I didn't get to the trailhead until mid-afternoon yesterday, but still had plenty of time, thanks to DST.

Sounds good! Keep your fingers crossed for that break in the weather that shows up in the 7-day forecast...

What about Saturday? Sounds like Easter is gonna be a wet one...and I'll be at church. It looks like the Gorge is greening up - time for shootin'.

Tom, the color balance maybe could use some work but I think it's decent overall.

I love this image!

Wow, I guess since we haven't seen 'green' for such a long time here on the Front Range of Colorado it just looks great! I am sure our old trustworthy moderator Rick Dunn is enjoying it as well now that he is living in the PNW.

At least from my work monitor (Dell LCD) the colors look fine - nice vibrant greens without being too over the top (eg - day glow). The composition, leading water lines, and 1 second exposure worked out for the falls as well as the stream.

Thanks for the warning about 'Spray.' I have to make sure and bring some decent drying cloths with me. I guess in the PNW this is a necessity no matter where you are shooting except for maybe winter shots in the Mtns.

I'm afraid Sunday is my only day as the family stuff will be done on Saturday...

Nuts! I didn't realize that Easter is this Sunday! Seems early, for some reason. Anyway, I think that nukes my Sunday, as well... unless I hide some Easter eggs along a trail in the Gorge...

Maybe we can hit it next weekend guys?

I think you did pretty well considering the conditions Tom. I hit Elowah on Monday and there was about 1.5x as much water as what you captured here. Really roaring. Made shooting from down there absolutely impossible (I only ended up getting three shots off from ANYWHERE at the base of the falls because of all the spray and rain). Whats throwing me off a little is the contrast in the background - under the cliffs behind the falls - looks too even to me. The shadows need to be darker back there.
