Advise from those that know. I am planning a trip to the Masai Mara for Aug/Sept to see and photograph the migration. Advise for reliable operators with good guides. The trip may have up to four persons (2 persons/vehicle and to accomadate all gear) and up to 15 days.
Thanks
You could contact Woni Safaris (www.wonisafaris.com of info@wonisafaris.com) in Nairobi. The manager is called Christopher Nthiani. They have very good guides and they can organise the whole trip for you. If you would prefer to do it youself you can book a flight to Nairobi and then a flight from Wilson Airport (the airline is called Safarilink) to the airstrip of the David Livingston Safari Resort. They have excellent guides, but the best is called Dickson Kasyoka. If you mention my name he might even do a little bit more for you. I have been there a couple of times and even though the lodge is not very very luxurious it has everything you need. The staff is very nice and the vehicles are excellent. Remember that baggage allowance on these small planes is just 15 kg, but payment for extra kg. is not very high. I think $4,00 per kg.
If you need more information, don't hesitate to ask. Have a fabulous trip!!!
We went last year with Jess Lee ( www.jessleephotos.com ) and had an outstanding trip. Jess used Origins Safari in Nairobi, run by Steve Turner. Origins doesn't deal directly with the public, so you need to go on an organized tour, but their guides were the best! We were in Kenya for three weeks. Jess is going back this year in October. Another experienced photo tour guide is John and Barbara Gerlach ( www.gerlachnaturephoto.com ). They are going back in August, and I believe they were using Origins Safari as well. The migration was tougher to photograph than we imagined; it's not like they are crossing all the time! We finally got good photos after five days, but meanwhile had lots of other great photo ops of lions, cheetahs, etc. Check out www.pbase.com/chasrob if you want to see some of our images from last August.
Re the baggage allowance, they don't have any scales at the air strip at Masai Mara, and the people at the Nairobi airport just weighed checked baggage, so you might not have a problem with excess weight, as long as you can carry on a single bag (I had 40 lbs of camera gear in my one carry on bag!)
Good luck.

With all the turmoil in Kenia at the moment, I wonder if a trip to the Tanzanian side of the border, through Dar es Salaam to Moshi and the Serengeti, would not be easier and safer.
