This is one from last year that I've looked at several times but not been able to make my mind up about the background....do you think it slaps in the eye's a bit?

D200, 200-400VR, 400mm@f7.1, 1/80sec, ISO 200. Shadows lifted with Capture NX, resize and lard on the beak removal courtesy of PS.

The colours seem a little harsh to me- note the red uder parts. I am sure you could "lift" the bird a litle and tone down the brighter backdrop. I don't know about Photoshop(can't stand it ! ) but easy enough in Paint Shop Pro.
By the way - try pastry mix instead of lard - been using it for years.
Eric Hosking recomended it to me and it doesn't stick so much !!
Cheers

I agree with Paul the BG is a little offputting and the Woodpecker appears to be in the shade. Could lighten it slightly. :toast:

Looks a little bit over-saturated to me, but I like it.

Great bird, good perch and I don't mind the background but one thing that lets the image down IMHO is the processing, particularly the colours which look a little over done, most noticeable on the red areas of plumage. Of course the level of saturation is a very personal thing, so it's very much down to personal preference.

Always exiting to get a shot of these beautiful birds.
All has been said.

As said its always great to have one of these close to you. They seem to hold a an air of mystery. It does seem that your processing has gone slightly wrong and being in the shade with glaring BG is always going to be a problem to get dead right in PS, but then again I am no expert. :toast:
