This may be old news to you guys, but just in case it isn't I'll share one of my latest findings. While in the UK this winter talking with another photographer about locations he pulled out his map and then he pulled out of his pocket a small clear plastic card. It had lines showing where the sun would rise and set each month. While I usually carry a list with the degrees and use a compass to calculate direction, this little card could be laid over a map providing simple and immediate information as to when to shoot a particular location. I just purchased mine and thought you guys might be interested in this concept as well. http://www.suncard.co.uk. The angles are based on the middle of each month.

P.S. While the photo may make it look like it is frosted, it is actually clear plastic, making it easy to see a map below it.

Sometimes the simplest way is the best. Same question as James: Is there a moon card?

I haven't seen a moon card, but what a great idea.

Erik - Thanks for posting this! The SunCard could be very useful if I ever decide to take a photograph.

Seriously, what a great trip-planning tool.

Thanks, Erik. This is exactly what I need, less thinking and calculating to do  .

Cool idea... I've got to wonder how accurate it is though, since the exact sunrise/sunset locations would depend on latitude. (Right?)
Posted by Erik Stensland on March 24, 2008 at 3:14 PM
Jack, they say it is accurate to within 5 degrees. My card covers the latitude of 35-45 degrees. They also have another one for 45-55 degrees.
