I am planning to ravel to Botswana via Johanesberg and wanted to get some advice on how some of you get your gear there. Hand luggage? Checked luggage? Any insight will be much appreciated.

Glen is right on the money... The "one carry-on" factor is very disconserting... I travel overseas almost monthly for my real kob, and take my entire camera kit with me. I can't fit everything into my camera backpack and I carry a laptop as well....
The problem is, the Airlines are going to smaller and smaller planes for travel between small to medium size airports and the major hubs in this country. If you're booked on a flight that's smaller than a DC9, you're likely to run into this problem. If I have the choice, I always try to fly on a plane at least the size of a DC9... If I don't, I usually talk to the pilot or crew when they arrive to board the plane, and explain my situation. Sometimes, a smile and being up-front and personal with them works. If it doesn't, I have some of those red "Fragile" stickers I pin to my well padded backpack, and check it plane-side, just before entering the plane. (NEVER at the check-in counter, as checked baggage...)
So far, no major problems since this rule came into effect...
