I've been asked by a large publisher to author a book for them and I am inclined to pursue the opportunity.

This is my first time dealing with a publisher.

I know several members of RMNP have published books... does anyone have tips or suggestions regarding important issues, questions to ask etc.?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Cant really help you there since only publishing ive done is self publishing, but needless to say be sure youve read and understood every word before signing anything. Be alert for any restrictions imposed on your rights to do other work. Make sure you're gonna get reasonable royalities. One of the reasons (besides the fact that getting a publisher is tough!) that many of us have gone the independent route is that some publishers dont dedicate a lot of time or effort into promotion, so make sure you understand what role you play in selling the book. Good luck--im sure someone here with more experience will be able to offer some good insights!

Nat, here is a good book for photographers which had a number of pages of questions to work through before agreeing to a publishing contract. I found it helpful to help me understand some of the issues. http://www.amazon.com/Business-Legal-Forms-Photographers-CD-ROM/dp/158115206X/ref=pd_bbs_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&sr=8-1. In truth, since Todd was the publisher, he had thought of most everything and bent over backwards to be fair and thoughtful. Not something you are likely to find with a major publisher. Good luck on this negotiation! Can't wait to see a book by you!
