This was taken midday and normally I am not a big fan of middle of the day in open sun images but I had some nice clouds. Plus, I was enjoying this warm quite moment at the PH after a windy and unsuccessful photo journey up Tumalo Mt the day before. Anyway, please be honest if this just feels like a boring snap shot let me know.
And just a subtle reminder to always be prepared when driving to remote places. My car battery went dead as I left the radio and lights on while taking a nap (my bad) and when I woke up only an hour later I could not even roll up the windows. No one was around, and the ranger gone for the day and following day I would later find out. I only waited about 2-3 hours for the next car to come by and give me a jump, and fortunately I was not planning on going anywhere until the next day. Just a reminder to be prepared!
Hi Adrian This is not boring for mid-day in the least...to me. I think the mixed light works this scene perfectly! The soft reflection and highlighted brush against an indecisive sky is what makes this place special to me... you never know what will happen from one moment to the next. This may be a typical scene to the locals but I've travel a long ways many times to see this exact moment and missed it... I'm glad it happened for you!

The more I look at this one, the more it grows on me Adrian. As noted above, the lighting here is good, midday or not. I especially like the layering effect of the photo. Glad you made it back safe and sound!

Adrian: While you've done well with what you had, I don't think this is up there with most of your other posts. The FG seems a bit too generous and I agree with your implication that angled light would have been preferable. Still, the clouds are pretty awesome.

Thanks everyone for the comments, always appreciated. And I appreciate the folks that take time comment when it's not all great kudos. It's turning out to be a nice 'snap shot' and I will take it as such and move on!

Adrian: I'm having a second look at this, seeing more in the FG water and wondering just how much detail we are losing here due to jpeg compression. Maybe I was hasty with the FG comment - I would like to see a much higher rez version of this shot. I just posted an image and the FG lost quite a bit of detail, I was amazed.

Marc, it's not your comments only so no worries. There is a lot of detail on my image that can be seen through the water. It was lost in compression. Regardless the image is just average and nothing fancy. It was a nice moment of silence, sun, and solitude and that was probably one of the reasons I liked it... more for my personal feeling at the moment and less to do with anything great about the image.
Not boring at all, although I might suggest bringing the top edge down a bit; to me that would emphasize the golden hills and vegetation. The bright white clouds at the very top oppose the mood set in rest of the image, imho. I think this is a nice shot.
Not boring at all! I like it! The colors work well together - cool vs warm always works well. Poofy clouds ALWAYS help and you have those. Add in the layering effect and this "simple" image works well to my eye!!
Adrian, There is a great deal of detail coming through the fg water at this resoloution and that makes this image all the better considering what you call poor lighting... However, you only adressed the mid-day quality of the light for critique so I followed your lead and that was my mistake.
Let me try to put this into perspective... My fist reaction to this image was one of jelousy for having clear skies saturday morning with no chance of clouds appearing to enhance my views of the area before (as a hobbyist) having to drive the 250 miles back home by nightfall while you had the luxury of time to wait for a drama to unfold and capture it in a way that every local residents driving by this view on a daily basis would consider to be boring and commonplace. I might be wrong in feeling that images like this have much more heart than the seldom captured killer-shots made for calendars and this is the most honest representation of this particular area I've ever seen..... IMHO

as far as a nice photograph, yeah it sure is...but it just doesn't invoke any emotion inside me.....
I could, however, see this being used for publication someplace....
